Eldin gave a small concert before lunch to a group of ladies that included Countess Mina Awatin. Although well into middle age, the countess still had the firm, smooth skin of a younger woman. She watched him perform with a hungry expression that Eldin now recognized as lust. It amused him to realize, now that he could call himself sexually experienced, how many opportunities for sexual fulfillment he had missed before. He had seen the expression on Mina’s face on those of many other women, and probably some men as well, during previous performances and he had simply not understood what it meant. No wonder his brothers had always accused him of being naïve.
After the concert, Mina invited him to take luncheon with her and Eldin accepted.
She slipped her arm through his as they walked to the nearest dining room together. “I must confess in closest confidence that I was a little disappointed when her majesty accepted Lord Etarkan’s proposal for my hand. I had thought she might give me to you.” She gave him a sultry smile. “You would have found marriage to me most enjoyable.”
“I have no doubt,” Eldin replied with an amused smile. “But I think Etarkan will be a good husband to you.”
“I suppose,” she pouted, “but he’s so much older than you.”
“In fact, I think he’s less than ten years my senior.”
“But it’s such a critical ten years. The performance of men in their early twenties is so much more… energetic!” She breathed the last word with an ecstatic sigh.
“You are being very naughty, Countess,” Eldin laughed. “Etarkan will be quite unhappy with me for allowing you to speak so outrageously.”
She pushed her lower lip out. “Etarkan only cares about money. He’s such a typical, greedy Boccharan.” She leaned toward him and her eyes sparkled. “Sex is much more important.”
Eldin laughed out loud. “I cannot argue with that, my lady!”
They entered the dining room and Eldin guided his companion to an empty table. As soon as they were seated, a dining room attendant approached their table with a pitcher in each hand.
“Would you care for wine or water with your luncheon today, my lady?” the young man asked Mina courteously.
“Wine, please.”
The young man filled her goblet while addressing himself to Eldin. “And for you, your highness?”
“Wine, also, please.”
“Very good, my lord.” The attendant filled his cup as well. As soon as he stepped away from the table, two more servants arrived to slip shallow bowls of soup in front of them. A third held out soup spoons neatly arranged on a silver tray.
Mina took a spoon and made a face. “Oh, dear! He’s found us.”
Eldin looked over his shoulder to see Etarkan approaching their table. He lowered his spoon. “Lord Etarkan, I hope you will forgive me for usurping your lovely fiancée.”
Etarkan inclined his head. “Not at all. I readily admit that I most often find my dear countess enjoying the company of handsome young men. It doesn’t trouble me at all.” He smiled at Mina.
